Mr. Simmons is recognized in a small group of select attorneys who have the experience and knowledge to be certified by the Arizona State Bar as a Criminal Law Specialist. The criteria, formulated by the Arizona State Bar, often takes an entire career to obtain. Mr. Simmons was able to become certified within his first decade of practice. Recognized by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star, he takes pride in crafting superior representation, individual to each client.

A former prosecutor and recognized trial attorney, Mr. Simmons is experienced in criminal and DUI matters. He represents individuals who have been accused and charged with all types of crimes, ranging from homicide to DUIs. He has gained extensive experience and knowledge specific to DUI cases during his career, resulting in many non-DUI results through plea negotiations, and not guilty verdicts after a trial.

Prior to founding Long & Simmons Law, Mr. Simmons worked as a DUI and Criminal Defense attorney for over three years at two prominent Scottsdale firms. He served for nearly seven years at the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and spending the majority of his time as a Major Crimes Prosecutor. The invaluable experience gained during his time at the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office came from handling all types of misdemeanor and felony criminal cases, from DUI to homicide, including assault and drug cases.

Working with the Phoenix H.I.K.E unit, Mr. Simmons led many of the government’s kidnapping and home invasion cases that occurred in the greater Phoenix area. He received numerous awards and accommodations from the Phoenix Police Department and the Maricopa County Attorney’s office for his trial advocacy and efforts to help victims of violent crime.

My Approach

I approach each case individually and am passionate about fighting for my clients and am dedicated to providing the best legal advocacy possible.

Many people are overwhelmed by the legal system and are unsure what to expect. I take the time to explain the process and address the realistic options about what sort of outcomes could be expected. I’ve found this approach gives clients a sense of control over their future, bringing peace of mind. Communicating throughout every part of the process, and answering questions as they arise, keeps everyone on the same page until the case is closed.

Spending time in the juvenile courts has made me familiar with the judges, prosecutors and procedures in the juvenile justice system. I approach juvenile defendants with dignity and respect, but also with honesty about the gravity of the choices they’ve made.

EDUCATION

J.D. – Arizona State University cum laude & Truman Young Fellow
B.A. – Arizona State University, magna cum laude
Matt Long has distinguished himself as one of the most accomplished and experienced trial attorneys in the State of Arizona. He has been assigned lead counsel on over 75 jury trials and has been a part of some of the most complex, serious, and consequential cases in Arizona’s History. He has particular experience investigating and defending those accused of sexual offenses and child crimes. His unique background qualifies him as an expert in the fields of investigation, prosecution, victim disclosures, false allegations, victim bias, false confessions, memory and victim response.

Matt has demonstrated that if pressed to trial, he wins. He understands the prosecutor mind because during his lengthy career as a prosecutor, he was assigned to supervise other prosecutors in trial and provided training on advanced trial techniques. He uses his trial experience and prosecutor background to avoid trial and obtain the proper outcome by plea, diversion or dismissal. He has a record of resolving the cases that need to be resolved and going to trial on the cases that just have to be tried.

Matt Long has provided instruction to police and other crime professionals nationally. He teaches on the best practices of criminal investigation and trial presentation and provides consultation to legal professionals across the country.

The Arizona Supreme Court has determined Matt Long is one of very few Arizona attorneys with the knowledge, training and experience to qualify as lead counsel on death penalty cases. He understands challenging cases, mitigation, legal strategy and applies all available legal tools to fight legal, procedural and factual battles.

Matt Long enjoys holding prosecutors and police accountable when they are deficient in the manner they seek and execute due process. Matt is a lifelong Arizonan – a Tempe kid (once a Charger always a Charger); a Mesa father; a child advocate; and a friend to honest police, dedicated teachers and good parents.

Matt Long starts by hearing, because he understands the reality of family tragedy and the complexity of humanity. He knows that everyone has a story they need told. In some cases, their life is on the line, in others their job or reputation. Let Matt help you tell yours.

My Approach

I understand that life is complicated and there are many different reasons why someone would need my services. I have understanding of, and compassion for, every situation in which an individual may find themselves.

Furthermore, I treat all clients with dignity and respect, regardless of the crimes they’ve been charged with. I protect my clients in an unforgiving system, hold the justice system accountable, and communicate regularly, because my clients have the right to know what’s going on with their case.

After spending more than a decade prosecuting these cases, I have the advantage of knowing the mindset, motivations, and tactics the prosecution uses, and wield that knowledge for my clients benefit.

My Approach

Every case is personal to me. Whether a person has been in a relatively minor car accident or is experiencing the trauma from the wrongful death of a loved one, every case has the potential to turns a person’s life upside-down. Similarly, when a person is charged with a crime, no matter how big or small the allegations are, it can become a terrifying and life-changing experience.

The pain a person experiences after an accident is physical, emotional and financial. Because of this, I approach all of my cases with personal attention and a hands-on approach, working as a partner and advocate for my clients, serving in their best interest and helping them alleviate the pain they are experiencing to help them return to normal life as soon as possible.

In order to participate in their case, people need to understand what’s going on and what to expect. I communicate each step of the process, what is to be expected and what the next steps are.

Another big difference with my approach, and our approach as a firm, is when you hire us, you get our time. We meet face-to-face with our clients and give them access to our direct line so you can text or call with questions.
